Overview
Chullpas Sillustani Tour Half Day
The pre-Inca cultures built this impressive necropolis, which is located on a small peninsular plateau in the Umayo Lagoon, 34 km away. Northwest of Puno.
This site developed the pre-Inca culture “Pukara” for 1,500 years ac. Subsequently came under the influence of the Tiwanaku. And it is from the year 1,200 A.D. that the Qolla culture is established and several tombs can be observed, even the most sophisticated mausoleums of all types and sizes according to the rank they had within the Qolla society while they were alive. First, the corpse was mummified in a fetal position, and then placed in Chullpa along with its belongings, and in some cases gold and silver objects, as well as other ceramic utensils and food.
The characteristics of these constructions are:
An entrance, always directed towards the east, which served for the communication of the spirit of the deceased with the sun god. The entrance is always too small for the funerary bundle to have been introduced through it, it is considered that the bundle was introduced in the vault, before being closed.
The mortuary chamber formed with small stones that were not carved. They have an exterior cladding with blocks of carved stones of large dimensions, perfectly fitted into each other sealing the exterior without any need for mortar, inside as seen in the photos the stones are propped up by means of small stones.
In the sides, the blocks of stone of the external covering present cracks and protuberances to allow a certain flexibility of the structure, so that it supports the earthquakes.
At the top of the Chullpas, they have a protruding row, forming the cornice that adorns the chulpa. Some stones have bas-reliefs representing mainly lizards and snakes.
